In May 2025, Bangladesh approved the Cyber Security Ordinance 2025, marking significant reform in cybersecurity and digital communications law.
Some major changes include:
- Repeal of nine sections from the 2023 law, resulting in automatic dismissal of about 95% of ongoing cases that were filed under those sections.
- More offences are now bailable, particularly those involving speech or opinions. Previously, many speech-related cyber offences were non-bailable.
- Increased punishment for filing false allegations.
- Recognition of internet access as a civic right.
