The interim government of Bangladesh is working on strengthening consumer law to keep pace with new economic challenges, especially driven by e-commerce and supply chain issues. A draft amendment to the Consumers’ Rights Protection Act, 2009 proposes higher penalties for:
Hoarding of essential goods, which artificially restricts supply.
Adulteration of products, overpricing, and crimes specific to online commerce.
For businesses: compliance will become more stringent; maintaining honest supply, accurate labeling, fair pricing will be more important. For consumers: stronger legal protections and routes to seek redress are expected.
